What is a Gantry Crane?
5-ton gantry crane, also known as a bridge crane, is a type of crane that is used to lift, lower, and move materials and products in factories, warehouses, and outdoor areas. Gantry cranes are similar to overhead cranes, but they have a different appearance.
Gantry cranes have a “gate”- like shape, with two upright A-frames and one or two horizontal beams (depending on whether the crane is single-beam or double-beam) that span the width of the gate. Gantry cranes can move along a track that is laid on the ground, similar to the track of a train.
What is a 5-ton Gantry Crane?
A 5-ton gantry crane is similar to the concept I presented above, with the only difference being that a 5-ton gantry crane only has a maximum load capacity of up to 5 tons. This type of crane is widely used with the advantage of a reasonable cost and can withstand outdoor working conditions, suitable for the needs of many medium and small enterprises in Vietnam.
Classification
5-ton gantry cranes are divided into two main types: single-beam gantry cranes and double-beam gantry cranes. These two types of gantry cranes have different characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and applications.
5-ton single-girder gantry crane
Single-girder gantry cranes are a type of gantry crane that only has one horizontal beam, on which a wire rope hoist or chain hoist is attached for lifting cargo. This type of single-girder gantry crane has a simple structure, a lower cost, and is easy to install and maintain. However, a single-girder gantry crane is only suitable for places with lifting requirements that are not too large and do not need to move much.
The single-beam 5-ton gantry crane has a simple structure, including the following main components:
- Main beam: The main beam is the main load-bearing member of the gantry crane, which is placed on two horizontal running rails on the ground.
- Side beam: The side beam is connected to the main beam by braces, which supports and locates the main beam.
- Hoist: The hoist is the lifting component of the cargo, which is suspended from the main beam.
- Motor: The motor is used to operate the components of the gantry crane.

Double-beam 5-ton gantry crane
Double-girder gantry cranes are a type of gantry crane with two parallel horizontal beams, on which a trolley runs along the beam, and a wire rope hoist or chain hoist is attached to the trolley for lifting cargo. Double-girder gantry cranes have a more complex structure, providing higher performance. However, double-beam gantry cranes are also more expensive, requiring more materials and accessories for production, installation, and maintenance.
The double-girder gantry crane has a more complex structure than the single-beam gantry crane, including the following main components:
- Two main beams: The two main beams are placed parallel to each other, bearing the main load of the gantry crane.
- Side beam: The side beam is connected to the two main beams by braces, which supports and locates the two main beams.
- Hoist: The hoist is suspended from the two main beams.
- Motor: The motor is used to operate the components of the gantry crane.

Technical specifications
The technical specifications of a 5-ton gantry crane vary depending on the type of gantry crane, manufacturer, and customer requirements. However, in general, a 5-ton gantry crane has the following basic technical specifications:
- Maximum load capacity: 5 tons
- Main beam length: 10-20m
- Maximum lifting height: 10-20m
- Lifting speed: 10-20m/min
- Power source: 3 phase 380V
Advantages
5-ton gantry cranes have the following outstanding advantages:
- Can work outdoors, durable and withstands many harsh weather conditions well
- Simple and convenient operation
- Safe equipment
- Appropriate cost
- Has the ability to withstand heavy loads with large load capacity
- High durability, stable operation.
- Easy to install and maintain.
Disadvantages
- Requires enough space to install and operate the gantry crane
- Requires a system of rails and stable power supply for the gantry crane
- Requires trained and experienced staff to operate the gantry crane
- Requires a regular maintenance and maintenance plan to ensure the service life and efficiency
Applications
5-ton gantry cranes are widely used in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, construction, and warehousing. They are used to lift and move materials and equipment with weights ranging from medium to relatively large, such as:
- Steel, iron, and iron
- Machinery and equipment
- Raw materials and products
Safety Precautions for 5-ton Gantry Cranes
To ensure safety when using a 5-ton gantry crane, it is important to follow these precautions:
- Install the crane correctly and in accordance with the load capacity of the materials to be lifted.
- Inspect the crane regularly to ensure that it is operating safely.
- Only use the crane by trained and experienced personnel.
